the latest on hurricane sandy. al's upstairs tracking the storm. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah, and here's a storm, a powerful storm, a category 2, dangerous storm 440 miles southeast of miami, florida. 105-mile-per-hour winds, picking up speed moving north at 18 miles per hour. you can already see rain bands making their way into southern florida. here's what we have watches and warnings wise, we are expecting to see hurricane warnings right now throughout -- just about the entire bahamas and eastern cuba. we also have tropical storm warnings now up for a good portion of the eastern florida coast from key largo up to daytona beach with tropical storm watches back through the keys and up past north of daytona beach. the path of the storm, here's what we look for right now. basically staying a category 2 storm. but once it comes off of the cuba area, where it's gotten torn apart a little bit by the mountain there, it becomes a category 1 storm. saturday paralleling the

southeastern coast. in the meantime causing big problems for the southern and eastern florida coast. now, here's where the computer models differ. and this is what we are concerned about. in yellow, the american computer model keeps it off the coast and eventually hooks it into new england. the european model which historically is the more accurate of the two long-range by sunday keeps it close to the east coast and then early on monday, brings it into the delmarva peninsula south of new jersey, which would be horrible for the northeast. because that brings the strongest quadrant of the storm, the northeastern quadrant along this megaopolis. we have to keep an eye on this because as we move into the weekend, the entire eastern sea board is in play and we'll continue to track it. >> al, we'll check in with you in a little while for more information. now to the presidential race and brian williams' exclusive access to president obama on the campaign trail. they started out in iowa on wednesday, from there it was on

to colorado, los angeles, and a quick stop in las vegas before an overnight flight to florida where the president is beginning his day. brian just got off air force one, he's with us now by phone. brian, good morning to you. >> matt, good morning, we're hanging on for dear life and a quick-moving motorcade. we barely left the airport grounds a few minutes ago. no one on air force one can remember when the president did this last on a domestic trip choosing to get his night's sleep. and it was very few hours coming west to east, but miles to go before he sleeps again. he's got florida, virginia, illinois, ohio just today. and yesterday during one of our conversations, we asked him how he finds himself in exactly this position in this campaign. >> how is it with, what, 13 days to go? you're fighting for your life in

a 47/47 race. >> well, actually, i think we always knew this was going to be a close race from the start. and what we have right now is a -- is a lead that we've maintained throughout this campaign. and we are just going to continue to drive home the message that there are two fundamentally different choices in this election about where we take the country. >> so after the excitement of '08, given the power of incumbency, you've got bin laden, you did not expect to be sitting on a more substantial race than we are as we sit here today. >> no, brian. listen, you guys have some short memories. folks in your business were writing me off a year ago. saying there's no way i would win. so these things go in ebbs and flows. and the one thing i try to be is steady in terms of what i believe in, who i'm fighting for. and i think that one of the qualities i bring to bear in this campaign is people see what did i say i was going to do in

2008? and what have i delivered? and they can have some confidence that the things i say i mean. >> what's the dynamic like between you and mitt romney? >> oh, i think when you're candidates that you, and you haven't really interacted before, you can't say that you've got a real relationship there. >> so reports, especially just observations watching the two of you, you don't appear to like each other very much. you appear to tolerate each other because you have to. >> you know, i don't think that any relationship between me and mitt romney is different from previous presidential campaigns. john mccain i knew because i'd served with him in the senate. but i think if you look at george bush and john kerry, or george bush and al gore, first president bush and bill clinton, i don't think anybody would say that while you were in the middle of a campaign that you felt deep affection for the

other guy because, you know, look, you're fighting for competing visions. but what i think the american people understand is that this is not about two individuals or even two political parties. this is about two different visions for the country and how we are going to make sure that every single person in america who is willing to work hard is going to have a shot at a better life. >> mr. president, on domestic politics, a recent poll, 4% of voters said they would like a first term like the second, 62% of voters said they would expect major changes in a second obama term. would you be prepared to enact truly major changes? >> well, brian, if you think about that question, i'd like to meet the 4%. we went through the worst crisis in our lifetimes. we had the stock market freeze up, tank, financial market freeze up, small businesses couldn't get financing.

we lost 800,000 jobs the month that i took office. so, of course people want to make sure we continue with the progress that we've started to see with the housing market finally starting to strengthen, with the auto industry back, with job growth over the last 31 months actually outpacing the previous recovery. and the plan that i've put forward with education with making college and job training accessible to people, to ensure our manufacturing base is right back here in the united states as opposed to overseas, building on the work we've done, not only increasing oil and gas production, but also clean energy, making sure we're putting americans back to work including our veterans, rebuilding roads and bridges. all those things are designed to ensure we have more robust growth in the future. >> reporter: and matt, we're back live now, miracle of television, we're inside a

a single state, that is right here in ohio. yesterday in iowa, he was particularly optimistic declaring to the audience there that we are going to win. he's been sort of shifting his target audience focusing on the potential impact of president obama having four more years on families, trying to court women voters. also clint eastwood who got mixed reviews for that conversation with an empty chair during the republican convention last month is back promoting the candidacy in a new ad paid by bush strategist karl rove's super pac. take a look. >> someone doesn't get the job done, you've got to hold them accountable. obama's second term would be a rerun of the first and our country couldn't survive that. we need someone to turn it around fast and that man is mitt romney. there's not a lot of time left and the future of our country is at stake. >> reporter: and despite heavy criticism from the obama campaign about comments, controversial comments made by republican senate candidate

>> president at least able to keep a sense of humor about it. we're going to have more on that donald trump offer with "today's" professionals later on. natalie morales over at the news desk. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah and matt, good morning, everyone. an arrest in the death of the 10-year-old colorado schoolgirl, jessica ridgeway. he appears in court in connection with the girl's death. ridgeway disappeared earlier this month, her body found five days later. officials say sigg will also face charges in the attempted kidnapping of a 22-year-old jogger back in may. we'll have more on this coming up shortly. federal prosecutors have filed a $1 billion lawsuit against bank of america for selling defective mortgages to fannie mae and freddie mac. for more on how this could impact markets today, let's check in with courtney reagan at the new york stock exchange. good morning, courtney. >> good morning. bank of america is accused of

the white house and state department within hours of the attack show they were aware that an islamist militant group was claiming responsibility. hillary clinton responded that facebook postings could not be used as evidence in those early chaotic hours. the family of wounded pakistani girl malala traveled to her hospital bedside in england today. she's recovering there after being shot in the head by taliban militants for her outspoken advocacy of girls' education in her native pakistan. her medical team says she is comfortable and responding well to treatment. kennedy cousin michael scaco has lost his bid for parole, convicted for the murder of his neighbor. he is serving 20 years to life. the head of the parole board said it was odd for him to ask for early release while still proclaiming his innocence. on to the world series now. and game one went to the san francisco giants.

>> reporter: detectives say the suspect is a local boy, a teenager accused and responsible for a horrific crime that rocked this community. >> reporter: police say the suspect is 17-year-old austin sigg, a teenager accused of kidnapping and murdering 10-year-old jessica ridgeway. she disappeared october 5th. the fifth grader last seen walking to school, her dismembered body discovered days later in a rural open space. >> we can't give you a lot of information. affidavits in this case have been sealed. that's under a court order. so i'm precluded from giving too much detail. >> reporter: arrested tuesday night after what police called a tip, nbc denver affiliate kusa reports sigg's own mother called investigators. i made the phone call and he turned himself in. that's all i have to say, mindy sigg told the "associated press."

kusa reports sigg was interrogated for six hours telling detectives, quote, specific details about the crime that only someone intimately involved would know. all day wednesday, investigators were spotted inside sigg's family home just a mile and a half from jessica ridgeway's house. inside, law enforcement sources reportedly say they found human remains. meantime, at standley lake high school, classmates say he collected knives and swords and described him as a brilliant student. >> he was smart as all can be. he knew what he was doing, he had good grades, he was intelligent. >> friends say sigg was active in online gaming. before his arrest, sigg was enrolled in community college where friends say he was fascinated with mortuary science. he won second place in the crime scene investigation division at a state conference. megan barker was sigg's lab

partner in forensic science and said sigg was interested in how bodies decomposed. >> he was a really nice kid. he would help us with our projects, help the teacher with the computer. he was friendly. >> police have linked sigg to an atem attempted kidnapping on a running trail not far from his home. they say he attacked a female jogger on memorial day, the victim saying the suspect tried to cover her face with a chemical-soaked rag. police call sigg's arrest the start of justice for jessica. but for the little girl's family and this community, there may never be peace. >> it was so close to home. and he was just right over there. this is really scary. >> reporter: austin sigg is expected in front of a judge at 8:00 a.m. local time. he'll be in juvenile court, but prosecutors tell nbc news they have every intent on trying him

>> dorothy. >> thank you. >> dorothy. >> thank you, dr. oz. your wisdom knows know bounds. great and powerful oz. >> yeah. don't trust a man behind that curtain. well, also ahead, tom cruise's lawyers speaking out about the actor's $50 million lawsuit against the publisher of two magazines that claimed he abandoned his daughter suri. and then pippa middleton's new party planning book is out today. how are the critics receiving it? we're going to go live from london. we begin this half hour with our exclusive and very revealing interview with lee boyd malvo, the now 27-year-old was convicted of killing ten people in the d.c. sniper shootings ten years ago. we spoke to him by phone on wednesday from the maximum security prison in virginia where he's now serving a life sentence. >> i'm shaking now. i don't want to be here. >> it was a horrifying and random killing spree that gripped the nation. >> what appears to be home-grown

terror. >> over three weeks in october of 2002, the beltway snipers killed without warning in broad daylight at gas stations, on front lawns, in parking lots, targets selected at random and assassinated with a single bullet from a high-powered rifle. >> anywhere you are, you never know if someone's going to drive by and bang, that's it. >> after three weeks of panic, police caught the two snipers sleeping in their blue sedan. >> 41-year-old john allen mohammed and his 17-year-old accomplice lee boyd malvo were arrested and eventually convicted. mohammed put to death by lethal injection in 2009, malvo is serving a life sentence in a virginia state prison without parole. we spoke by phone on wednesday. >> it was october 24th, 2002, when you were arrested. let me begin there and go back. what's your most vivid memory of that day. >> it's being violently woken out of my sleep. i was asleep.

and within a matter of five seconds, i was in a -- i was in custody. >> do you remember your mind set? >> my thought process immediately went into trying to figure out where i was, whose custody i was in, and what steps i should take from there. in the sense that i was intent on protecting mr. mohammed as best as i could. >> you're saying at that moment you had lost all sense of self? as those police officers arrested you, most people would've thought, well, this is probably going to mean i'm going to spend the rest of my life in jail or i'm going to be executed. those thoughts didn't immediately cross your mind? >> no. i mean, because at that point in time to a certain extent, i was already dead. and that death, per se, is not what i feared the most. i feared letting him down more than i feared death.

>> can you say that when you shared your life story with him after you met him and told him about what you had been through as a child that in some ways you were giving him the blueprint by which to control you? can you explain that? >> i was bedridden for a period of time, i basically divulged everything. and i found him to be an excellent listener. so in doing so without ambivalence without holding anything back, i provided him with a blueprint. he knew exactly what motivated me, what i was looking for, what was lacking. >> you have admitted now that there was abuse. what kind of abuse? and at whose hands? >> early on around the age of 6, i was -- around 5 years old, i was sexually abused by a babysitter. and then later on by relatives, when i was 8, 9 years old.

and then for the entire period when i was almost 15 until i got arrested, i was sexually abused by john mohammed. >> there may be cynics listening to this, mr. malvo who say he's coming forward with this information about sexual abuse at the hands of mohammed right now because he's hoping it might have impact on his situation and his future. is there any part of this revelation that you think is going to change your situation, your lot in life, your time in prison? >> no, not really. >> not really. in some ways do you hope that people will take a look at you in a different light? >> i mean, i seriously doubt this is going to change anything as far as my life goes. >> and yet i would imagine the family members of the victims would say you had opportunities to stop, to run away, even through the abuse, even through the manipulation. you could have done something to stop the killing and you did nothing.

>> i couldn't say no. i had wanted that level of love and acceptance and consistency for all of my life. and couldn't find it. and even if i'm consciously or even in moments of short reflection i knew that it was wrong, i did not have the will power to say no. >> what was it like for you to pull the trigger? and when you did and killed, did you have any doubt that you would kill again? >> when i pulled the trigger for the first time, this may sound surreal, but it's simply what happened. >> you described yourself once as a monster at that time. explain that to me. >> when someone cannot go beyond themselves and begin to consider how their actions affect others and are solely motivated by

their own self-interests, we call them psychopaths. >> to this date, are there victims of your shooting spree that have not been identified? >> yes. >> wouldn't it be helpful to family members of those other people to give more information and tell the police what you know? >> without anyone contacting me two and a half years ago, i reached out and did that in five different instances and different states, but there was a point in time where psychologically i couldn't handle it. this is the reality. in here, i have no one. i have to take care of myself. yes, it is something i want to do and will do. >> some people listening to this right now are going to say, wow, that's a lot of self-pity there, he's feeling awfully sorry for himself. and they're going to think that's outrageous. >> i understand that, but there's nothing i can do about that. i'm just being honest.

i mean, i'm not going to pretend to be something i'm not. >> have you forgiven yourself? >> yes. >> for all of these crimes? for all of these innocent lives lost, you've forgiven yourself? >> yes. that's the only way i can live with myself. >> and based on the grief and horror you inflicted on those other families, do you think it's the life you deserve? >> i wouldn't wish this on anyone. i wouldn't wish this on anyone. this is well, i mean, it was intended to punish, and that what -- it is effective. i mean, it is complete deprivation. i mean, i don't see outside. i have no contact with animals, plants, people. >> you have told our producer mr. malvo this will be your last interview that you won't speak about your crimes at any point inhe future. so to the family members of the victims, if this is, indeed, the

last time they will hear from you, what would you say to them? >> i would share with them what i've used for myself, what has worked for me. please do not allow my actions and the actions of muhammad to hold you hostage and continue to victimize you for the rest of your life. if you give those images and thoughts that power, it will continue to inflict that suffering over and over and over and over and over again. do not give me or him that much power. >> law enforcement officials offered no comment when asked if it's possible there could be more victims. former fbi profiler and nbc news analyst says there is no proof

that other crimes occurred. and given malvo's age and the control he says muhammad had over him, malvo may not have a reliable memory of the events. and according to clint, this could be a cry for attention from a person spending a long time in solitary confinement. as for the known victims of the d.c. snipers earlier this month, nbc's chief justice correspondent pete williams spoke to bob myers whose brother dean was shot at a gas station in virginia. he says the passage of time does not erase the sense of loss, but he has come to understand a bit more about lee boyd malvo. >> we recognize that he was a tremendously -- under the control of muhammad. and he was, probably a good word would be brainwashed. and since that time he's gotten as we understand it some mentoring, some help, and has had some years to recognize what

he did. and our understanding is that e he, given the chance, would not have chosen to take the same course again. but he can't alter that. >> the conversation with malvo lasted some 40 minutes. we're going to make the vast majority of it available online so people can hear for themselves. >> how many lives destroyed. >> absolutely. we want to turn and check the weather. >> sandy, but it is also going to be affected by this front that's making its way through the midsection of the country. ahead of the front, look at these temperatures, buffalo near 80, 76 in chicago, 82 in huntsville, denver getting 3 inches of snow and 37 degrees. tomorrow that front moves to the east. we look for temperatures really dropping, but here in the east, we'll continue to stay warm, 70 in atlanta, 75 in washington, d.c., ten degrees above normal. that's what's >> good morning.

soulful interviews. she's so clear about the mistakes she made. >> that's what the real take away from this is. in fact, we have another portion of the interview to play. when she talks about the mistakes she made. let's listen. >> i did not call 911, and i should have. and i've come to find out that 50% of women while having heart attacks and suspecting they're having heart attacks do not call 911. and it was the stupidest decision i ever made in my life. >> do a lot of women ignore the symptoms? and is that something that you see mostly in women? or everybody in the circumstance? >> specific to women really. women don't put themselves first. they put their kids first, their husband, their work, everyone comes before them. but in addition to the heart disease, it's an additional problem. it's not on the radar screen. rosie's a young woman, when she had the symptoms, they were so classic, how did she miss them? when a woman dies in america, one of the first places we look

as a cause is inside their stomach. you know what we're looking for? we're looking for pepto bismol. maybe they thought it was indigestion but they were having a massive heart attack. she could've died, she probably should've died, it's a miracle. >> the smartest thing she did was take an aspirin, right? >> and please remember, if you think you're having a heart attack, don't just take the aspirin, do what rosie did, chew the aspirin, and anyone over the age of 40 ought to be on aspirin anyway. but if you're not going to take it, keep it near you. >> we've got less than a minute to run through the symptoms. chest pain, a classic sign, but women may not experience it in their chest. >> men get that vice-like feeling, women will get pains in their arms and neck. don't get fooled, if it does not get better over a few minutes, it's getting worse, might be a heart attack. >> nausea and indigestion. >> that's why we look at women's stomachs for pepto bismol, you

have to assume it's a heart attack. >> shortness of breath for obvious reasons this is a particularly dangerous sign. >> the most important of all because it means the blood's backing up in your lungs, they can't work anymore, you've got to get the water out of them. only the heart can do that. that shortness of breath, if it occurs, activity that didn't use to bother you, big deal. >> fatigue and doeizziness. >> when it doesn't get better when you relax, that worries me. these are five symptoms, if you have two or three, you have to assume it's your heart. tell them you might be having a heart attack, that way you will not get ignored. >> it's a good interview, rosie talks about changes she's making in her life, as well, and it airs today on the "dr. oz show." this would be a great breed with kids, as well. >> absolutely. >> guess what this little guy's name is? boo. an adorable 2 1/2-year-old baby who had a very sad situation. >> yeah, his owner was ill and could no longer care for him. >> so he is looking for a lovable home. and he's going to get a nice haircut in the process. say hello to jack-o-lantern. jack for short and just a really adorable, what, poodle mix? >> yeah, also rescued as a stray, found wandering on the street by himself. >> when you first hold him, he was trembling for a minute, but he settles in. he's saying i need a new home now. we have our only girl in the group appropriately called candy, she's very transfixed on the boys over there. >> she's a 2 1/2-year-old pug mix. >> oh, yes, you are. and she says can you please let me down so i can flirt with that big fella over there. there she goes.
